Firefox + uBlock Origin + sponsorblock. Set it and forget it.

I haven’t seen an advertisement or a sponsored segment on my desktop in over a decade, and same with my phone for several years. I’m astonished how willing most people are to put up with a constant barrage of ads coming from devices they own

Firefox allows all addons now on mobile but for a while it was only a few selected addons (ublock origin being one of them)

I am currently using 19 extensions on mobile

Brave is a bad product as of now.

Firefox with ublock is at least acceptably performant on desktop and mobile without all the crypto/tracking downsides of Brave or the open unpatched vulnerabilities (as of this posting) of Chrome/chromium (that also affect Brave)

You should switch to Firefox with ublock origin.

Brave is a mess of a browser and a dumpster fire of an organization, even compared to the famously dysfuctional Mozilla.

You can look up your games on ProtonDB and see which will and won’t work. Pirated games are no different from retail compatibility-wise but there might be one or two extra steps

Wayland is a mess for me with Plasma 6 (Fedora) but i’m not going back to X11. Quite a few features i use(d) have been broken along the way.

Honeybees are quite invasive in North America. They kill and displace native pollinators and they are generally less effective pollinators of native plants. The release of dozens more colonies into the ecosystem is a negative thing no matter how you look at it.

North America has the greatest native bee diversity of any temperate part of the world, but if you go out into habitat and actually start counting insects you will find honeybees outnumber everything else in most places, most times of year.

Suspend and hibernate both work 100% of the time for me so far on both of my laptops, and have for as long as i’ve had them.

Fully working since 2019 and 2016 respectively. I have not tested opening the lid after just 5 seconds so i can’t say for sure how long it takes.

My previous laptop before these (an x200) would sometimes fail to suspend and get super hot in my bag before running out of battery. I was using Gentoo at the time and i suspect i had something configured incorrectly. It only happened a few times but it was pretty frustrating.

nano but i’m a casual. i can use vi/vim in a pinch, but i’m inefficient. ed and emacs are totally foreign

i tend to use a graphical text editor like Kate unless there is a specific reason to do it in the terminal

Ah i see. You are right, new hardware would need new drivers.

If MS just released the source of W95 as GPL you could still use the existing proprietary drivers, but like now you’d still have to download them from each vendor.

Making it possible to study the code itself would allow WINE devs to audit their code for edge cases and get W95-era compatibility to pretty much 100%

He was my representative until i recently moved. I’ve met him twice at coffee shops in Fremont just by chance.

He always seemed friendly and normal, if maybe a bit performative. The guy he originally replaced was a very old-guard corporatist Democrat, so i initially had high hopes for Swallwell.

my one critique is pretty subjective, but i find it difficult to find simple clear documentation online about how certain syntax works and how certain tasks are accomplished.

Recently i was trying to set up a cron-job type automation to run a script every minute. I know how to do that in cron (and if i didn’t, there are tons of good resources online) but i had a hell of a time figuring it out for systemd. I also wanted to have the script run at boot or user login and i couldn’t figure that one out (but i know how to do it with cron)

i’m not a power user so it’s entirely likely the information was hidden in plain sight and i completely missed it

I remember booting Gentoo in about 7 seconds to the GUI desktop around 2013. A lot more than systemd has changed in the Linux ecosystem since then. It feels like everything has gotten just a little slower.

That’s kind of the best case scenario though: there isn’t even a significant benefit

And by hoops i only mean the kind of thing you just described (despite not being a systemd thing specifically) : small differences with the mainstream distros that might cause friction for someone inexperienced. It’s not the end of the world. I was being a bit hyperbolic admittedly

I think there are plenty of pragmatic reasons an experienced sysadmin or Linux power user might prefer OpenRC or something sysVinit compatible over systemd, but i think those reasons make a lot less sense to someone who is, respectfully, obviously a beginner (revealed by their use of the phrase “gaming compatibility”)

20 seconds isn’t that fast…

I’m using Fedora on a sata SSD and mine boots in about 15 seconds. My laptop running Ubuntu on a sata SSD is about 17. Both running normal systemd

edit: i just timed ubuntu at 12 seconds. i do not have luks encryption though

If you are asking about “gaming compatibility” you should not switch to a non-systemd distro. You will end up going through extra hoops for zero benefit.

currently Fedora KDE and it’s fine
