The other part is that DHH has a reputation as a fascist. The fact that he, of all people, is receiving a ton of money for his half-assed Linux distro makes a lot of people uncomfortable.

There just aren’t any good deals any more. Prices for everything have gone crazy in the last few months. For coding LLMs the cloud services may now be the least worst value, by design, until they hike the prices.
That said, I still just paid way too much for a used graphics card so I could do many things locally, because I just don’t want to give the likes of Sam Altman a single penny.
But remember they’d also have your IP address, which could be linked to a lot of other data. It’s not that IP address + license plate is useful in itself, but that a connection is now made that could be valuable to a data broker who already has other information connected to one or both sides. And even if you fake your IP address, there’s browser fingerprinting.
I’m skeptical, but to play devil’s advocate: I guess it could help a data broker that had some information attached to a license plate number, perhaps including your identity. When you enter your license plate number into this web search, they can associate the IP address and browser fingerprint of the request with the license plate and therefore with your identity and any other data in the first database. This enables them to connect your identity and your vehicle to whatever online activity data they have for that IP address and/or browser fingerprint.
The grocery stores near me have big signs with Canadian flags on, marking some shelves as all Canadian. They wouldn’t bother if they didn’t think it would help sales.
But if you just dismantle democracy you don’t need the people’s support. And that project is well underway.
Surely there are already databases containing all the license plates that have been issued. The useful thing is tracking where people go. So what would such a scam achieve?

Climate change is real and catastrophic, demands radical and urgent change, and has been globally recognized by scientists for decades. The ways many corporations and governments have framed it, and the non-action disguised as action they have promoted, are self-serving bullshit. You are throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
It’s no coincidence that capitalism comes along with an emphasis on individualism and “expressing yourself” through consumption. It’s designed to train people out of collective thinking (class consciousness) and collective action, and it has been very effective.
