For me most often it’s because of incorrect item weight, not because I screwed up. Even if I go to another machine like some of you are suggesting, it would probably end up the same with me ending up wasting my time; and if it’s not the first item, I suppose it might trigger a security warning (i.e. me picking up my items before paying).

If you double scan something, it should wait to weight the second item scanned. Where I shop, the machine doesn’t let you scan anything until you put the already scanned one on the scale. If where you are it relies just on cameras, then yeah, it could be faulty like you say.
MacOS has the advantage (that the other OSes don’t) of being developed in house by the same company that designs the hardware.

11·3 days agoDepends on how you’re viewing this. If you take something useful out of it, sure, it has some value, but if you just leave it running like that just for the lulz, it’s almost the same as leaving the heater on with the windows open.

21·5 days agoI don’t care about LLM welfare, but I do mind needlessly wasting energy like this.
Depends on where you are.
Where I am, alcohol, tobacco and gambling were all prohibited in advertisement, then gambling had a pass (because those making the laws are most likely in the pockets of gambling execs), but it looks like it will get prohibited again.

Yeah, I’m with you on that one, but I’m also realistic.
Ads for gambling should be prohibited, just like those for tobacco and alcohol.

Technology@lemmy.world•F-Droid gets its biggest update in a decade with new UI and smoother app installsEnglish
2·12 days agoAh, right. It’s still tagged as beta, maybe that’s why it doesn’t appear in other places (like in the news article on their site).
Thanks for the tip.
Where’s the accent circonflexe?

Technology@lemmy.world•‘I miss old Google’: readers tell us how they search the internet in the age of AIEnglish
1·13 days agoCould be, but consider even the simplest example: being logged in, searching for something, then with the same browser, same everything, you log out and repeat the search: you will most likely get slightly different results. That might overlap with what you described as well.

Edit: saw it’s actually still a beta (and probably this is why it doesn’t show), here’s a link for the APK: https://f-droid.org/repo/org.fdroid.fdroid_2000050.apk

5·13 days agoYeah, in the end it depends on the use case. Some things are a simple search away, others need compiling of information (manually or with the help of an LLM).

12·13 days agoLLMs have saved internet searching. For the first time in years, i am getting (usually) relevant information for my questions.
I tend to disagree on that part. LLMs in a web search should be opt in, not opt out. They do help, but not always. For many searches that I have the answer right in the first result (sometimes even in its preview along the link) there’s an LLM running and needlessly wasting resources, summarising very often what I already know.

Well, if they’re cutting expenses at the end, they’ll continue going this way.
