3·3 months agoIran lost 1 million men during the Iran-Iraq war.
A war where Iraq was supported by the gulf countries and Western countries including chemical weapons (later used on Kurdish villagers).
I’m not really sure why anybody thought Iran would back down.

This would be a massive own goal for the existing incumbents.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage | Cory DoctorowEnglish
2·5 months agoThe last bailout was required because the banking system was the artery of the economy.
As irresponsible as they were, they needed to be functional to allow the economy to function.
It is hard to see how the government can afford to bailout the “AI” sector.
It is also not critical to the economy. In fact, you could argue the bubble is costing the economy in terms of opportunity costs, increased energy prices, consumer prices for laptops, hard drives, etc.
My view is while they may want to bailout their tech bros friends, I’m not sure it is possible.

Technology@lemmy.world•Moral Panic and Australia’s Under-16 Social Media Ban: A Critical Youth Work PerspectiveEnglish
91·5 months agoI don’t have a problem with a social media ban on young people in theory.
We have multiple studies which show the negative impacts on young people of social media.
My issue is how such a law is implemented. It requires mass collection of user data and surveillance.
