I mean, they keep bringing up “national security”, why not flip the script, uno reverse.
Stop saying “privacy”, say “I don’t want [insert foreign adversary here] to spy on me”. And claim that there might be those foreign spies embedded within your country’s intelligence agencies so we can’t have any “backdoor” because “those foreign evil spies could be using them to spy on our beloved fellow countrymen!”

Perhaps, but given how often governments issue themselves a free pass on things that they make illegal for everyone else, I think that getting this idea to work as we hope would require a lot of careful shepherding, and I fear that the leaders able and motivated to do this are often in the minority.
So let’s get some better leaders.
