I have no idea about xlibre, never used it just saw that it exists. It sounds like it will likely fail. Phoenix looks more promising, but haven’t used that either. And very much I doubt use anything until Debian offers it as a drop in replacement.

In general X is battle tested over decades and while there are oddities and warts, but throwing it all away for a whole new set of the same is not going to go smoothly. Which can be seen by the very slow adoptation of wayland.

But if people like it then they should use it, I just vastly prefer X still. Whenever I try Wayland it feels like a WIP and not nearly ready yet.

There is also Xlibre to modernize it and get rid of old cruft. It is still early stages though, so who knows if it will succeed or become abandoned, etc.

And the rampant cheating. Every single game that has more than a few players will have cheaters. Rootkit-as-a-service or not, there will still be cheaters.

You could also actually just use it. Just because it is physically located on the root disk doesn’t mean you can’t add some directories and give your user full access to them.

I usually have a /mnt/scratch, usually on another disk (hence mnt). Or you could make another steam library in /opt/. Steam can have multiple data locations.

The purists might yell at you, but it is your system. If you have space to spare in root use it, just remember what is where if you need/want to reinstall at some point.

Edit: or just nuke the NTFS partition, and use that partition as extra storage. Usually you don’t need that much in root, and if you do you can always symlink to another dir to get around it. Just remember to copy anything that might be useful from the ntfs! User/<foo> has a lot of data, I would copy at least that. Reading ntfs data is not a problem from linux, writing is more hit and miss.

Well, to be fair a lot of people using windows are laughing at microslop too. Just with a few tears mixed into it.

I actually had a sound issue the other day. Just no sound, how weird. It worked the day before. Checked wpactl, volumes etc, everything was fine and working. Restarted pipewire, still no sound.

Turns out my external mixer lost power because the powet socket was slightly loose.

Same here. Started around ham/slink and then just kept using it.

Mostly on servers but for over a year it has been the only booted OS on my desktop (maybe time to recycle the windows m2-drive soon). Sid on desktop is great.

To be fair, the arch wiki is very good. I use it quite often despite not using arch. Quite a few things are valid on other distros, or you can get hints on how to fix it, like where to start looking.

Still doable, but you can’t have external RAM. Hence, lack of RAM is a bigger issue.

It is not a lot, but it is not that hard to extend storage. For example with an external SSD/HDD or a NAS.

Servers are debian, desktop debian. Why swap when you found the best already? 😁

I guess technically steam deck is not on debian, but I didn’t choose it so it doesn’t really count.

I don’t mind the assignments if they aren’t too big. If they are, which is quite rare, I just tell them it is too big.

Rather have an assignment than some stupid live coding meeting.
