Servant gets confusingly close to “server” which is already a badly overloaded term.

Peripheral means something different.
Not anymore, but it does come from that root.
Definitely not a good match for many situations.
merc@sh.itjust.workstoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•Took me back to the ol' Jeb Bush days, I tell ya-- please clap.3·4 days agoI think someone explained it to them, but they still probably felt sad. It’s fat man and little boy though, named because they bombed so hard.
Which was an advantage of the old way. At least it was consistent and when you came across that terminology you knew what it meant. It wasn’t always the best way to describe the relationship between nodes, but at least it was consistent.
I remember back when my mom was just anxious. That was bad enough, and meant that I’d avoid sharing any problems with her because she’d worry too much. Since then she’s gone off the deep end, believing just about every conspiracy theory that exists. So, now it’s not just that I avoid sharing any problems, or any deep things. I actively have to watch everything I say around her to avoid triggering a rant involving a conspiracy theory.
I think the anxiety fed into the conspiracies. IMO many conspiracy theorists feel a complete lack of control over their lives, and conspiracy theories make them feel better because they can blame “the powers that be” for their problems. And, even if they still feel out of control, they at least feel like they know the hidden truth of what’s happening. Knowing that hidden truth makes them less anxious. The world is still scary and they have no control, but someone has control, even if it’s someone evil. It’s not just random things happening with no plan.
Anyhow, I hope your mom just stays anxious and doesn’t go nuts like mine.
I’m continually amazed that my mom manages to function in the world with all her crazy beliefs and issues.
I wish there were a good alternative to
master
andslave
that still had the connotation that the master did all the thinking and issued the orders, while the slave blindly obeyed. There are a fair number of protocols that work like that, and the alternatives I’ve seen don’t capture that dynamic very well.I’ve seen
Parent
andChild
, but children definitely don’t always do what the parent commands. I’ve seenLeader
andFollower
, but again, followers don’t just blindly obey, they often let the leader take initiative, but they have some autonomy. MaybeQueen
andDrone
? I don’t know enough about bees or ants to know if that’s accurate though.
Apparently master / slave goes back more than 100 years. An example is “slave jib”, which was a sail on a sailboat that was permanently set to catch the wind, and was almost always working. Or slave clocks and master clocks, where one primary clock is used to set other dependent clocks.

To him, everything Greek was good. Mostly I just agreed with him to get him to move on to other subjects. But, there was one point of disagreement we couldn’t get past. He insisted that the Greek army was fearsome, and that the Greek Presidential Guards were imposing and scary. I thought they were goofy-looking. Judge for yourself:
merc@sh.itjust.workstoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•Took me back to the ol' Jeb Bush days, I tell ya-- please clap.3·5 days agoThey didn’t clap because the were ordered to come to attention. When you’re at attention you don’t move, you don’t clap, you just stand still. From the video, you can actually see that they do applaud once they’re released from attention.
I hate the DUI-hire, but let’s not cling to false narratives the way the MAGA crowd does.
That sounds wonderful. Typically if a place has that little tech debt it means that they’ve overhired and there isn’t enough work, but if you said they were on a limited budget, then maybe not. It does sound like the kind of place where I can imagine that happening though. A tech-focused workplace would probably find or create other work. For a hospital, the IT department is a random cost centre, and probably fairly cheap compared to doctors, medical equipment, insurance, etc. And, a hospital probably understands much better than most workplaces about why security is important (keeping patient records private), why a “move fast and break things” attitude is sometimes a terrible fit, why documentation and checklists matter, etc.
Did you ask them if there was any tech debt? Because, I wouldn’t be surprised if they thought there were things they could improve. Like, the documentation probably looked complete to you, but maybe they knew that there were a few areas they could have done better. Like, with the “cleaning” analogy, I’ve been places I thought were spotless, but the people who cleaned it always thought there was more they could do.
You either have tech debt, or you haven’t done anything.
It’s like cleaning, you’re never done cleaning, you just stop when the dirtiness is at an acceptable level.
Now, if someone said “We have very little tech debt because people who take on our tech debt are promoted or given bonuses.” That would be wonderful.
merc@sh.itjust.worksto Technology@lemmy.world•Trump says TikTok should be tweaked to become “100% MAGA”English1·8 days agoSo, Trump effectively nationalized TikTok, valued at $300b. He sells it to friendly oligarchs for $15b. So far, this is basically the post-USSR playbook, and how Roman Abravmovich, Alisher Usmanov, Vladimir Lisin, etc. got so rich.
But it might piss off his oligarch buddies if he drives all the users off TikTok making what seemed like a steal into something worthless instead.
And yet, there aren’t very many of them but there are billions of us.
Even if their lifestyles result in 1000x as much pollution, they only represent 0.00004% of the worldwide population, which is not enough to move the needle.
To put that in perspective, metro Tokyo has a population of approximately 38 million. If the fraction of billionaires in Tokyo matches the global ratio, there would be about 15 billionaires in Tokyo. Anything 15 people do in Tokyo will be just noise compared to what the other 37,999,985 people do.
Let’s just pretend that all 3000 of the world’s billionaires lived in the USA. They’d still only make up 0.001% of the entire US population. Even if they were flying around in personal jets, being followed by Airbus Beluga jets carrying their yachts, it would still pale in comparison to the sheer number of people currently suffering in economy class right now.
I still think billionaires should be squashed by a hydraulic press, but I’m not kidding myself into thinking that doing that will have any impact on the environment at all. I support it more because they’re greedy assholes who are taking far more than their share, and who are using their immense wealth to distort the well functioning governing of the world.
Yeah, I’ve used a mandoline to do it before. Frankly, that’s really the only way I’d do it these days. But, even then, it’s a lot of work and it’s hard on the eyeballs. Plus, mandolines are scary. I know what not to do when using one, but it’s like a fear of heights. Even if you know you’re doing it safely, it’s still nerve wracking. Maybe if I had a chain-mail glove I could do it without fear, but I don’t have one.
they don’t like the taste of onions, they like the flavor.
I don’t think the distinction between “taste” and “flavour” is the right way to frame it. Raw onion on its own can be overwhelming. If you eat a hamburger with raw onion on it, the amount of raw onion per bite will be pretty small, and it will be one taste in a whole bunch of other tastes. Your kids probably wouldn’t like eating pure salt, or pure pepper either. But, food with some salt tastes great.
Having said that, fried onions are a whole different game. After 5 minutes the onion loses a lot of its potency and gets a bit sweet. After 30 minutes it’s basically a very slightly pungent candy. For a French Onion Soup, you can cook them for up to 2 hours before they’re ready. A pot that’s full to the brim of raw onions reduces down to a thin layer at the bottom, and they taste more like gummy worms than onions at that point.
I love French Onion Soup, and occasionally make it. I’d make it more, it’s just that slicing up more than a kilogram of onions is a whole process. It’s so difficult it makes me cry every time I do it.
There’s a common joke about that. It goes something like: “A [Ukrainian] starts frying onion and garlic in a pan and only then starts thinking about what they want to make.”
[Ukrainian] can be substituted for most other countries, to be honest.
But, to be real, garlic shouldn’t be fried for that long IMO, so I’d only put in the garlic about 30s before I was ready to start adding all the other ingredients. But, with the onions, I’ve actually started onions more than 30 minutes before figuring out what else I wanted to make. That way they have a chance to get good and caramelized. That doesn’t work for every recipe, but it works for a lot of them.
That’s true.
