They were founded in 2012 and exist primarily to challenge US laws that are overtly religious. If a governor passes a law saying public schools must teach Bible study, atheists can’t legally object under US law. You can only object if a law violates your religion, not your lack of religion. So what if you made atheism a religion? That’s the Satanic Temple.

It’s Satanic themed on purpose because “court rules schools must provide children Satanic literature” makes for a funny headline when in reality it’s just a paragraph about critical thinking.

That Jehovah dude, on the other hand, comes off as a petty tyrant prone to hissy fits and overreactions of catastrophic (and often genocidal) proportions to anyone who doesn’t RESPECT HIS AUTHORITAH or treat his favorite people as precious snowflakes that have first dibs on everything and everyone.

Shefali Aurora, ACLU of Iowa staff attorney, said Monday that “state officials have made it clear that they denied The Satanic Temple permission to hold events in the Capitol rotunda because they disagreed with their religious viewpoint. It is a foundational principle that the government cannot restrict speech in this way, favor one religion over another, or discriminate against religious groups because they don’t agree with them …
