Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds let Claude Code fix the Linux page cache. Then reviewers found a race.English
1·4 days agoNo, LLMs only contain a bunch of numbers that predict which word is likely to follow the previous ones. Their output resembles knowledge simply because the most likely combination of words is one meant to convey information.

Technology@lemmy.world•Fairphone unveils Fairbuds 2 with replaceable battery, Sony LDAC and ANCEnglish
1·4 days agoI’m not arguing about what is technically possible. I’m arguing about what is practically possible: Samsung (biggest market share) supports LC3 for example, but they can also break it and replace it with their custom codecs to lock people into their ecosystem. Making Sony LDAC the only real choice, and there’s no telling when they will break that too. This means that in practice, only SBC and to a lesser extent AAC and SBC-XQ are the only codecs you know for certain will work.

Technology@lemmy.world•Fairphone unveils Fairbuds 2 with replaceable battery, Sony LDAC and ANCEnglish
3·4 days agoOnly if both your device and your earbuds both support aptX Lossless, which in practice means it almost never gets used because Samsung (holder of most of the market) does not pay for the licence or enable it in their phones, and the Chinese brands only do so for specific tiers and processors.

A lot of people need to learn to both say no, and not care about what people say after you said no.
People who have 0 interest in respecting your choices are not worth pleasing.

World News@lemmy.world•Trump administration hits International Criminal Court with sweeping sanctionsEnglish
31·12 days agoSadly, they still get hit by sanctions when it comes to banking, software, etc.
If Europe and the rest of the world doesn’t immediately defend it, it might be done for.
This also will probably accelerate the decoupling from US services and software the rest of the world has been working on.
I’ve only remember ever having audio dissappear during the really early Ubuntu days (We are talking like version 7 or 8). Now if you told me Linux has issues with audio crackling due to apps requesting absurd audio parameters, then yeah, that was a more recent and persistent issue that only recently seems to have gone away.
Our bosses sold this “AI analysis system” thing to another company, and for the most part it was a horribly vibecoded but otherwise unremarkable dashboard. But the AI analysis part? It’s a fucking chatbot that all it does is ask you which graph and which data you want and it picks from list of preset graphs in the frontend code, and then makes a call to preset endpoints in the backend to get the data to fill it… All things that could be done without the chatbot in the middle.
Most “AI products” are the same griftware.
The real problem is that only the first part of the wish got granted: everyone has computers, but they don’t know how they work and thus can’t use them responsibly.

My (soon to be ex) bank recently decided to make everyone use their ID card number which can be obtained from many sources and does not change, a username with symbols and numbers and minimal length requirements which cannot be changed and a 4 digit pin code. No 2FA at all, so its only saving grace is that you get locked out at 3 tries.
I’m guessing they are trying to align everything to their legacy ATM pin code system instead of making the ATM system better.
I have no issue with spiders, but now that a small lizard took residence somewhere in the house there’s almost none left. And also no other insects as well.
All Android devices are Linux, it just happens to be the worst kind of Linux possible: one that entirely depends on proprietary drivers and is controlled by a company hellbent on closing it down through total dependence on their services.

News@lemmy.world•Court rules trans women can be housed in men’s prisons & calls them men “who claim to be female”
71·28 days agoYou also get the same issue with trans men. We a had a local case where a trans man was convicted of a crime, and the local authorities decided to send him to a male prison, respecting his self-identification. He proceeded to immediatly challenge this through the courts for obvious reasons.
In this situation, it’s impossible to escape the drawbacks of your biology so long as prisons assume a dichotomy. And the vast majority of the population considers any criminal to be subhuman anyway, so asking them to acommodate a sub-percentage of what is already a tiny 0.1% of the population is impossible. They would sooner vote to just execute them to save themselves the hassle and expense.
