  • One problem

    Batteries.

I’ve used old devices as many things: security cameras, a form of intercom, digital picture frames, etc. The real problem is that the batteries eventually go bad, and become dangerous.

For the few devices that have realistically replaceable batteries, that’s no big deal, but how many of those are left now?

No thanks to the potential fire, I’ll pass. The few devices I have left that I can swap batteries out are becoming harder to find new batteries for as well, so that’s an issue beyond their anemic hardware (I’m talking really old tablets at this point)

  • Well, calling it misogyny isn’t a directly accurate issue, though if you step back a ways, the connection is there. Part of why Hillary caught so much shit was the fact of her being a her in the first place.

However, the joke has existed for decades, long before she was a relevant name in the public consciousness. I’ve heard or seen it applied to politicians since the eighties at least, sometimes with long ex presidents. Hillary wasn’t the first woman to catch that kind of generic joke, Geraldine Ferarra (spelling?) was the target of pretty much every cookie cutter joke like that, and she was nowhere near the hot target Clinton still is now (even after the collapse of her public influence). So there’s room for debate on the joke itself being misogynistic.

But the mods in question definitely nailed that it’s a stupid, unfunny, cookie cutter joke. It’s the kind of unfunny crap people complain about being subjected to at holiday gatherings by an asshole relative that can’t drop their identity politics long enough to be decent company at fucking Christmas.

Also, backhanding the back of someone’s head is an awkward movement when both people are seated close enough together to talk, and it makes this specific use of the joke format fail hard because it engages the logic filters, so if you’re going to use it in the future, consult a professional joke crafter.

  • Every time I go to my kid’s school, I am amazed at the difference between my day and now.

That time I went, there were kids just in pajamas and slippers. Not just one or two, dozens, and it wasn’t some special day.

Then there’s the dressier kids in lounge pants and whatever giant tshirt they pulled out of a drawer (or laundry basket) that were obviously their version of pajamas. Shit, one girl had very obviously rolled out of bed, thrown some leggings under her nightgown, slipped into crocs and jumped on the bus.

It’s pretty cool tbh. Just no fucks given for meaningless frippery unless the individual kid/family wants it. Most of the kids were relaxed, nobody giving them shit for the way they’re dressed, staff not even noticing at all. That’s the way it should be imo. Whatever gets the kids in their seats and keeps everyone relatively engaged.

Yeah, there were still plenty of jeans and t-shirt sorts, a few of the button up shirt variants, and a handful of clothes hounds. But nobody was giving anyone shit about the clothes. From what my kid says, that wasn’t just the case for the hour or so i was there that day.

We insist on clothes that are weather appropriate and acceptable for an emergency, but beyond that after seeing the norms there, we stopped giving a fuck.

  • Look, that’s the entire reason I disliked her as VP and as a candidate.

But the words you used, the way you used them do not accurately represent the facts of the matter.

So, yeah, it’s misinformation. When someone bends facts, that’s exactly what it is.

Hyperbole being presented as fact is just another form of misinformation.

Since the only action taken was removal of the comment, I can’t see any power tripping, just a difference of opinion about the precise definition of what makes up misinformation.

I can’t fully say YDI in this case, because you clearly weren’t acting in bad faith to break a rule.

But it also isn’t a clueless mod either.

It’s somewhere in between those two. The comment being removed was a justifiable action. If they’d done anything at all beyond that, it would have been over the line, but they didn’t.

  • This is both PTB and YDI

While your comment didn’t deserve to be removed on its own merit, you were in what amounts to a slap fight. The mods were definitely over the line, yes. But, if they’d nuked the thread instead of playing favorites, it would be all YDI.

It’s never a good thing to stir shit, without being prepared to accept the inevitable intervention of a mod or admin. When someone goes into a political or religious space, and joins in a slap fight full personal attacks and off topic nonsense, their comments are going to be removed. You don’t seem to have started the slap fight, but you jumped in.

  • Damn, this is a trip

This is both PTB and YDI.

The blanket bans on a different instance is definitely overkill, which points right to a power trip. If it had been one or two, maybe it could be dismissed, but that many? Nah, that’s fucking crazy.

But you were being a dick all up and down that thread.

Now, I want you to stop for a second. See what I just said? What are you thinking and feeling right this second, after reading it.

Go back to the thread you linked. Reread what you wrote with whatever reaction you had to me saying you were being a dick in your mind. See all those places where you were projecting that anyone that might object to your pronoun usage were being lesser because of it? Yeah, you were essentially just saying they would be dicks, and that you were better than them.

Now, it doesn’t really matter whether point has any validity. It could have been relevant, but you were ranting all throughout the thread. When someone does that, they have to understand that it could come with consequences. That the consequences were far out of line is a separate issue.

Now, fwiw, I actually partially agree with your premise, though the way you express it, and the details of your reasoning behind it are not good. Particularly the part about why “cishets hate us”. I get why you might think that, but it simply doesn’t match the words and actions of the bigots.

Basically, you took a pet peeve, went on a rant and it was tangential to the actual post. I’m surprised the ban wasn’t from beehaw, they tend to frown on that degree of venom from anyone.

But, again, despite you deserving something for running around foaming at the mouth digitally, the blanket bans are way out of line too
