I have never heard someone called stupid for getting a rabies vaccine when the animal could not be tested.

Sounds more like an issue with the assholes you were surrounded with than with you. Good on you for sticking with the obvious smart choice.
And if you don’t know why, look up what happens to humans with untreated rabies. It’s virtually untreatable and one of the worst possible ways you can go.
A shot to the genitals twice a day for a year would still be better than rabies.
