Democrats might never get what they’re asking for. But they seem to have significantly more leverage than the side refusing to vote for government funding usually does.
A new poll Thursday from the Washington Post tells the tale.
Democrats are the ones who withheld their votes from a “clean” continuing resolution to keep the government funded this week. And history suggests that’s the side that usually gets the blame. Americans have overwhelmingly said that shutdown debates are no place to try to force extraneous policy changes.
But at least initially, voters are actually blaming Republicans more.
Nothing matters except for what physical actions they take. Do something. Set the fucken floor on fire.
Hmm, stepping on rakes is about the only leverage I’ve seen US Democrats use. The world would be happily surprised if they did otherwise.
I’m sure Democrats spend money internally on consultants and studies and polls, but it feel like they are rarely and randomly stumbling into good messaging and strategies.
Ah, you’re close to the point. Their job is to collect paychecks from their benefactors while getting as close to those poll values as possible for the greatest amount of voters. Those priorities should be exactly flipped, and that is why we have Trump and Co.
Fucking duh.
I’m cautiously optimistic after these polls and hoping that they learned their lesson after caving the last time. I think the potential for bad polling spooked them the last time, but with this, they might find their spines and get some concessions from the Republicans. At this point, we really need some sort of victory.
But I always leave room to be disappointed.
Democrats will find a way to fuck it up. They always do.

If you’re being dismissive of the pattern and practice that Democratic politicians - particularly those in leadership positions of the party - in the US have by and large exhibited for well over two decades, you are simply not paying attention.
I am managing my expectations with the DNC and Schumer and Jeffries; those expectations have been on the floor for a good while now, and yet somehow they manage to occasionally dig a tunnel underneath so they can fail to meet them. I constantly hope that I’m wrong, but I’m generally not. I genuinely don’t believe meaningful political opposition will materialize until Schumer and Jeffries are out, and someone far more combative and staunchly opposed to fascism is in those leadership spots. I furthermore think that this demonstration of utter and consistent ineptitude and capitulation by Schumer and Jeffries (and Harris, tbh - after losing a winnable election to a fascist, anytime she says something recently, it’s just absolute 🤦♂️) - and the DNC establishment and consultant class in general - may in fact be the death knell of the Democratic Party - or at the very least, its current incarnation. And in my book, that’s a good thing, considering how anti-progressive the are, and how neoliberal and corporatist they’ve become.
Democrats have the gold medal in seizing defeat from the jaws of victory, and you’re not paying attention if you think anyone who says that is a troll.
Idk about the other poster, but I’m not Russian. I can’t stand vodka.
