Plasma has improved A LOT in the past year. Like a year ago I hated it. now? I daily drive it. I hate to use this phrase but everything just works.

I was kinda disappointed with the 6.6 release as I really just want dedicated virtual desktops per monitor but their compromise actually isn’t that bad. I just had to turn off animation for changing workspaces and it’s fine. Even tiling works A LOT better on Plasma than it used to and dare I saw kinda works better/is more smooth than Sway and the like and I’m not even using krohnkite. you can quickly toggle the splits for windows and even do vim style navigation between windows. you can even do vim navigation with windows that aren’t tiled.

Plus the stuff they have packaged in is just better than most alternatives out there. I love Konsole. it has everything I need. and Kate is also a fantastic IDE you can REALLY customize that is slept on by many people. Dolphin is great too. It’s nice having a DE that just has all the stuff you need right out of the box and you don’t really have to change any of the defaults.

Canadian here. We find you annoying. It’s all talk and very little, if any, action from your leaders and it’s annoying. And ALL of them are complicit in this including your favourites be it Bernie Sanders or AOC or Crockett. They all make sure they get a good sound bite or twitter post in and then…nothing, no follow through. another couple reps list off names from the files and then…nadda. One just straight up came out and said “Trump raped kids” soooooo where’s that impeachment? arrest? no? nothing?

And the infuriating thing is your Republicans NOW know they can get away with it. Again look at how Bondi behaved. many Americans on here and on reddit were saying “she’s acting that way cause she’s scared” no she wasn’t. she’s was acting that way cause she knew she could get away with it.

And to TOP it all off you still have your fellow americans posting daily things like “I think we’re the baddies now” or “we’re starting to become fascist” or “I don’t like America either”. sigh. I guess. I think I just need to settle on the fact KDE is never going to allow dedicated virtual desktops per monitor. I really want to use Plasma but this is a deal breaker for me.

it’s already available? CachyOS for example switched to using it as the default like a month or two ago. It’s already out there.

I didn’t say it was constant. I only said every now and again on the free trial I’d get an ad. Maybe it’s because I only used it with Qutebrowser. I don’t know. but I know that sometimes I would get an ad on a video.

there’s no point. I tried the free trial of youtube premium cause i’m on Qutebrowser and the adblocking isn’t the greatest. even with Premium i’d still randomly get ads every now and then. IF i were paying for it I’d be pissed.

Now I circumvent this by just opening all the videos in MPV.

before I made the switch to Linux I never used a terminal. never. hell on Windows I even used a GUI for Git. I used sublime text as my IDE. if it wasn’t a GUI I was lost.

Then I switched to Linux and it forced me to actually sit down and learn the terminal and now…now I have a hard time using GUI’s. If something has a CLI or TUI option then I go for that over a GUI. like everything even my music player and video player. my IDE of choice now is DOOM Emacs. my file manager is Yazi. for Git I either use lazygit or just straight up the command line. but for everything else it’s just so much faster and in the long run easier to just use the terminal.

All that being said if you like GUI’s then hey more power to you and that’s fine. that’s the beauty of Linux. you run your system how you want to and don’t let others tell you otherwise. Hell I know a guy that uses NixOS and doesn’t have anything installed other than git and comma. he runs everything via comma. literally everything.

I use DOOM Emacs. is it potentially a bit of overkill? sure. but it’s got all the plugins I need, built in terminal, built in git tui, built in file manager, and depending on what i’m writing web dev stuff in it automatically sets up a sort of basic bootstrap for me.

Yes there is a bit of a learning curve but honestly I just don’t bother using anything else now.

I mean if I had it my way everyone would just go back to IRC, I still use IRC. it’s great, nothings changed, it’s perfect. combine that with like mumble or teamspeak and you’re good to go.

I checked out Stoat lastnight and it’s very slow. took well over an hour to get a verification email (I assume because many others were signing up) and the current server offerings are minimal. Also a good majority of the themes listed simply don’t work. it’s growing and I’d say it’s the best alternative right now but it’s not there yet and I worry it or the various instances of it could hold up if there was a massive Discord exodus.

Matrix is a no and xmpp ain’t much better.
