Probably stems from the practice in early photography of posing the dead in “lifelike” ways. Y’know, just kinda carried over into the “leadership”.

What the fuck? Strom Thurmond was in office at 100 years old? Am I reading this right?

EDIT: “A staunch opponent of civil rights legislation in the 1950s and 1960s, Thurmond completed the longest single-person Senate filibuster, at 24 hours and 18 minutes in length, in opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1957.”

Would you look at that… He was something of an expert at overstaying his welcome

EDIT 2: Thurmond died from complications of old age in his sleep at 9:45 p.m. on June 26, 2003, at a hospital in his hometown of Edgefield, South Carolina. He was 100 years old. After lying in state in the rotunda of the South Carolina State House in Columbia, his body was carried on a caisson to the First Baptist Church for services, at which then-Senator Joe Biden of Delaware delivered a eulogy,[319] and later to the family burial plot in Willowbrook Cemetery in Edgefield, where he is interred.[320][321] Thurmond died on the same day that the United States Supreme Court handed down its Lawrence v. Texas decision, which legalized gay sex across all U.S. states.[322]

Folks, if you didn’t know this guy, you gotta read his wiki. It’s hilarious. It’s like he lived only to see everything he hated happen before his eyes.

Yes. This is the example I bring up when people are hopeful that evil politicians die in office. These assholes have a way of hanging on way past their expiration date.

Evil seems to have the ability of pickling an individual. Black hearts seem to beat longer than bleeding hearts.

Another famous example would be Henry Kissinger, who also managed to reach 100.

Also, and I can’t believe I am a proponent of this but look what happened to the us presidency without it, maybe we should have basic literacy tests. Not like, failing them bars you from office, but part of running is taking a literacy test and publishing the results.

Idk, I’m kinda high and haven’t given it much thought.

Strom Thurmond is basically the prime example of needing age limits for elected office, that shithead didn’t retire from the senate until he was 100 then died a few months later. He was pro segregation and pro jim crow laws while claiming he wasn’t racist just a supporter of “states rights” just like other lowlife white supremacists and still somehow kept that senate seat until freaking 2001. By the end there he was basically a way more evil crypt keeper making sure to do as much damage to humanity as he could on his way out.

Raped the fifteen year old working for them, got her pregnant and legislated against her his whole life, too.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strom_Thurmond#First_daughter_with_Carrie_Butler

Thurmond’s colleague, Senator Patty Murray, stated in 1996 that Thurmond, who was 91 years old at the time of the incident, tried to fondle her breast in an elevator.[316] According to The New York Times, Thurmond had been known for fondling women in Senate elevators, and did not realize Murray was a fellow senator.

Isn’t it a,azing how tjese “states rights” activists always seek to support a state’s right to discriminate? Sure, the civil war was ankut states’ rights. States’ rights to own other humans as property!

The aggravating thing is, I think there’s a few niche subjects where “states rights” is a perfectly valid thing to wish to enforce. There is a decent argument that transgender rights are better handled on a local level, where it can be informed by the direct experiences of the 1-10 individuals they actually affect. Yet the Republican flagpole around states rights has used it for racism, cronyism, and oppressing women.

transgender rights are better handled on a local level,

Human rights should be protected at the federal level.

You’re arguing that Mississippi should decide how to handle segregation laws.

Yes, that is my preferred ideal - but human rights can also be fought at the federal level!

If we accept for the moment that there are ghouls looking to oppress people, creating sanctuaries people can run to ends up having value. That’s where pro-immigrant states, pro-abortion states, and pro-trans states provide value in their existence, even if the ideal would be to protect everyone everywhere.

I’m also just admitting at what gets easier to argue. People resist laws to cater to a group if they’ve just never seen or heard of any members of that group. Much of the evil “success” on Trans Panic laws has been because the voting population only knows of those people through slanderous attack ads. But if the decisionmaking happens in one school county that knows the 2-3 students affected, the votes are more human.

“States rights” is never specific because it’s talking about state’s right to own people, or segregate, or other racist things. If it’s for something good then you just say what you’re actually wanting to do.

Yes, because you’ve always seen it used by the Republican Party.

Over the course of decades, the “pet causes” associated to each political party has shifted a lot. We think of them as a constant but not so much.

I fully agree with the “States’ rights to do what??” memes, based on how Republicans dogwhistle it. Realistically though, if there can be some basic faith that the person asking for a particular “states right” is not a horrible person, they can have some decent points to it.

I totally agree with giving states more control. The thing is, if I’m ever discussing it, I’m not going to be as vague as “states rights”. That’s my point. It’s not that the argument is bad, but that the only reason to be vague is to conceal the true intent.

Agreed, but that’s a very poor example. A somewhat better one would be state voting systems. Without federal control they get a lot harder to game.

Only coming up +5 during this election does mean it was that close. This was a historic election for shifting towards Democrats. +5 this election basically means it would have been very close, or she would have lost, during any other election.

After repeating the same shit 100 times and bombarding you with ads the website eventually quotes a tweet, I’ll save you a click to the website equivalent of a mole infested anus:

When I came out of the bathroom, he was on the bed, naked, on all fours. I noted that there were dark marks around his anus. I asked if he had showered (he said yes). I asked if it was OK if I wiped him down (he said sure). I wet a face towel and wiped and wiped between his buttocks, and nothing was coming off. Then I realized that his taint wasn’t dirty, it was just FULL OF MOLES."

They continued: "Dark moles, in dense clusters up and down the length of his taint. ‘Aw,’ he said. ‘Hope you don’t mind.’” And at this point, you might see where the ladybugs come in, but if not, here it is: The male then said, “Those just my little ladybugs.”
