Parastoo Ahmadi sang while wearing a sleeveless dress during a concert livestreamed on her YouTube channel in December 2024. Iran’s laws ban public performances by women and require them to wear headscarves and modest clothing.
Iran’s judiciary launched proceedings against the 29-year-old after the video went viral, gaining millions of views, saying the performance was “in violation of the country’s legal and cultural regulations”.
She’s lucky to be alive.
This is life under Islamic rule. There are no PRIDE parades in Iran. You better keep your head down and your mouth shut, or they will murder you.
Was it THAT bad?
And once again religion proves how full of shit it is.
religion is just the excuse. It’s conservative men who are full of shit.
Can you define conservative? What are they trying to conserve? The old ways, traditions, right? What even is religion if not tradition? They are the same.
It makes no sense to try to absolve religion of any responsibility for this kind of shitty behaviour, just because there are some young people who are still in its thrall.
An appeals court in Iran has confirmed a sentence of 74 lashes handed to a prominent singer who performed without the mandatory hijab,
Absolutely immoral demented and savage. Only religion can make otherwise “normal” people behave like outright sociopaths.
Religion didn’t make this happen, sick conservative fucks use religion as a scapegoat to be sick fucks. Pay attention most of these twats don’t actually follow their religious teachings, just cherry pick what they want to oppress people. Same shit we deal with in the USA with the bible thumpers.
Sorry comrade, but mass murders and genocides have also been perpetrated by atheists.
Genuine question; what are you referencing?
Pol Pot in Cambodia certainly qualifies
Careful bro, you’ll upset the Internet atheists
Yes, though religion is more problematic due to their holy books having loads of these things they can and often use to justify it. Shit people will always exist, but let’s not pretend the situations are similar.
So doing evil things because iNvIsIbLe MaN iN tHe SkY is abhorrent and reprehensible, but doing it just because they want to gets a pass?
I left reddit because of ‘enlightened’ opinions like these.
Then maybe it’s time to go
The worst part about Trump being the fucking man-child that he is is that the regime hardliners have now an even firmer grip on power, as he once again proved that there is no way of appeasing the US outside of complete capitulation.
5 Weeks left for this asshole to do what he wants. The left has to come out in such large numbers that results cannot be disputed effectively by anyone.
Then what? A law which says to stop military action against Iran that the Supreme Court strikes down? Cutting budget to ICE that the Senate filibusters?
I’m not saying that it won’t be better, but the rot runs deep and can’t be removed by a single election.
Americans still think they can vote fascism out of the government.
Most analysts determined that Iran was in a political death spiral and that the worst thing the west could do was interfere. If the west stayed out of it, all signs pointed to a significantly more moderate regime change. Trump took office, Israel baited him, and Trump bit, like the moron he is.
Yeah, I was really rooting for the New Iran movement. Tankies called me a fucking zionist for it.
Now those hopes are shattered. Fuck trump, and fuck netanyahu.
The New Iran movement was literally a western op, Trump himself admitted they armed them. There is no case where Iran has an internal struggle and the US doesn’t exploit that opportunity to steal their resources and immiserate it’s people.
The New Iran movement was going on for a lot longer than the student protests last year that people like you were trying so hard to dismiss as western imperialism.
The New Iran movement has been going on at least since Mahsa Amini was beaten to death in custody for not wearing a hijab “properly.” For you to dismiss that as a western op is as chauvinistic as it is insulting. As if the Iranian people have no agency, and need a brutal regime to protect them from the Evil West™'s meddling?
Of course Israel and the US would try to co-opt such a movement, but that doesn’t mean the movement itself was inauthentic. And trump tries to take credit for everything, so I can’t believe you’re actually attempting to cite his facial rectum as a credible source.
Almost like a secular Iran isn’t in Israel’s geopol interest.
Conservatives need a Boogeyman
Also a “democratic Iran” means unsanctioned Iran. The last time sanctions were partially lifted, Iran’s economy grew by 7% per year. Such economic growth means production growth. Production growth means arms prod growth. And that’s arms that can “fall into the wrong hands” and could be used against Israel after one “wrong election.” If I wanted to dominate the region militarily, I would do anything in my power to keep Iran under strict sanctions.
Much like a more moderate controlling power in Gaza.
It’s to keep a Russian ally afloat
Moderates didn’t have a chance. There’s 10-15% of religious hardliners that control everything and around 20% that’s indifferent or too scared. With modern weapons and surveillance that’s more than enough
It takes a certain kind of genius who can take a pariah state on the verge of collapse and turn it into a kind of underdog while destroying the world economy.
The place is a police state and IRG were and are the real power. They were still there and they took control. When attacked, most people rally around the the flag so there was a lot of inertia too.
With their supreme leader dead, why didn’t the moderates in that country arm up and take control?
Most of them were killed in December and January trying to do just that. I’ve seen estimates as high as 50,000, but most are reporting 30,000-36,000.
The exact numbers are impossible to verify because Iran shut down the entire country’s internet to cover it up.
Because it was never the simple
no criticism of iran for you in this analysis
are you like piker, supporting palestine, iran, even bin laden because america bad?
meanwhile this poor woman wiill be scarred for life if she even survives. i guess there’s no way of appeasing these fundamentalists either
Ain’t theocracy horrible? Members of the Trump administration desire Christian Nationalism for the US, and were it come to pass, we’d see similar things, like systematic discrimination against LGBT people.
USA is already seeing the moral decline from religious influences. With extreme discrimination of minorities, and taking away the right to abortion.
Absolutely if this is allowed to continue it will get worse. But USA is already a country heavily influenced by religious fanaticism.

A generation ago, Iran was not like this. Islam itself does not require any of this. An important part if Islam is that the Qur’an cannot be translated, so it is in a form of Arabic few people can really understand. People must depend on the mullahs to tell them what it says. (Which was once also what Christians said about the Latin Bible, though that makes even less sense than the Qur’an because the Bible was translated into Latin.) This is anti-women conservatives using the guise of religion to push their hatred on women and control the population as a whole. As you say, Christianity was once used in the same way, but it still is now, isn’t it?
In the US, abortion is a bogeyman used to threaten women from getting healthcare (even to the point of death), and monitor and control their movements. It’s being done under the guide of “Christianity”. “Christianity” is used against people of different races (because they can’t really be Christian if they’re not white), actually other religions, sexuality, and gender. Yet, how much did Christ ever talk about these things?
I’m not sure what you are proposing ? How do you plan on ending Islam exactly ? Do you have a battle plan of sorts ?
In no case of Western intervention have regular citizens fared better. Afghanistan. Iran. Iraq. Palestine. Syria is being “governed” by a
CIAAl Nursa operative and Syrians are rioting, despite a brutal crackdown and Israeli mass destruction.Japan and West Germany?
IS there another Japan on the planet I am not aware of?
Maybe Vietnam?
Though that’s a war that never should have started
No. Vietnam is most assuredly better off with communism. A lot of sexpats enjoy the low cost of living and services available.
Japan’s economy is collapsing precisely due to American intervention. The US decided that Japan was doing too well, and so made it destroy its own economy.
West Germany would have never existed if it wasn’t for the US. It was a decision made strictly with the goal of dividing and weakening Europe.
Japan, who gets yen bailouts at US worker expense every other year; West Germans just helped the USA hide Nazis via Operation Paperclip.
Are either of those worse than the non-US-intervention alternative? How would it have been better for ordinary Japanese citizens for the totalitarian imperial government to be left in charge (and without US aid)? How would it have been better for ordinary German citizens to be hit with a second Treaty of Versailles instead of the Marshall Plan?
Without US-intervention, Imperial Japan was a regional superpower.
No, I mean after the US beat them in the war, would ordinary Japanese citizens have been better off if the US hadn’t helped the country rebuild?
Japan, of all countries, categorically doesn’t get to be lumped in with “intervention” given that they famously attacked the US, not the other way around.

The Marshall Plan was horrible for those under it’s subjugation. Versailles was also USA rubbish.
Japan wouldn’t have been needlessly nuked and the white man’s burden doctrine seriously needs to be, since it’s ever only a wealth and resource extraction policy.
The Marshall Plan was horrible for those under it’s subjugation.
LOLWUT? Are you seriously going to try to pretend average Germans weren’t better off after WWII than they were after WWI (because treating them the same as after WWI would’ve been the other option)?
Japan wouldn’t have been needlessly nuked and the white man’s burden doctrine seriously needs to be, since it’s ever only a wealth and resource extraction policy.
I can’t parse this sentence. Did you omit a word?
No, I said it correctly.
From: https://www.ucpress.edu/books/the-united-states-of-war/paper (I’m sure you can search it up, if you CBA):
“In geopolitical terms,” writes historian Alfred McCoy, the United States "became history’s most powerful empire because it was the first, after a millennium of incessant struggle, to control ‘both ends of Eurasia,’ " with bases from the British Isles through Southeast Asia to Japan. To guard the empire, the U.S. military had 2.6 million active duty troops; 2,650 ships and 7,195 Navy combat aircraft; 15,000 Air Force fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft; and nuclear weapons ready for launch from the air, the land, and the sea.9 The growing nuclear weapons arsenal of the Soviet Union played some role in the base proliferation: more U.S. bases meant more targets and dispersed forces. The growing fear of a nuclear-armed Soviet Union likewise played an important role in governments agreeing to a U.S. presence. “Viewed from one perspective, this was an act of [U.S.] benevolence,” writes foreign bases expert Amy Holmes. The United States was providing protection. On the other hand, other nations were ceding a significant degree of sovereignty to the United States (while also turning themselves into targets for Soviet missiles).10
In Portugal “the supersensitive question of Portuguese sovereignty was constantly being raised before our negotiators,” reported Col. Lawrence C. Coddington, Air Force Deputy Assistant for Air Bases. “Every point of issue revolved around the question of sovereignty and were [sic] resolved only after lengthy discussions on many proposed drafts.” Coddington acknowledged that “the agreement as written does not meet the ultimate in Air Force desires.” But, he continued, "it must be kept in mind that the Air Force cannot hope to achieve its desired ultimate in operating rights in small foreign countries purely because of that country’s jealousy over its sovereignty."11
The sensitivity of the Portuguese government about its loss of sovereignty was common among countries hosting U.S. bases. The rapid requests for the Yankees to leave after World War II revealed this. Even with growing fears of a clash between East and West, base negotiations were often difficult. Generally, they revolved around the degree to which U.S. forces would enjoy “extraterritoriality”—that is, the extent to which U.S. forces would be free from local laws, free from local prosecution for committing any crimes, and free to conduct military operations without restraint or consultation with the host nation. In other words, negotiations focused on how much effective sovereignty the U.S. military would have on foreign soil and thus how much sovereignty a host country would give up. Even with the United States’ closest allies, such as Great Britain, sovereignty would long remain a “focus of tension,” especially when it came to crimes committed by troops.
the white man’s burden doctrine seriously needs to be _____
There’s supposed to be a verb after that.
Also, I have no idea what the fuck you’re trying to prove with those three paragraphs, since they don’t even mention ordinary Japanese citizens once. Remember, the argument you’re trying to prove is that ordinary Japanese citizens would not have fared worse if the US hadn’t helped Japan rebuild and transition to democracy after WWII.
You didn’t respond at all to the challenge that US interference in West Germany was overall positive, via comparison to the post-WWI circumstances, which would likely have been replayed.
Women are better off under the Taliban than under US occupation?
US intervention created the Taliban
Yeah I know Afghanistan was really at the forefront of womens’ rights before the American showed up
Before US - Taliban alliance
This photo is from the late 60s, so 25 years before the Taliban was created.
Because US intervention began with the Taliban. 🙄
If you want to only look at the US intervention in Afghanistan holistically, then sure, you can make an argument that overall it has been negative, especially given the disastrous pull-out.
But to me a “case of Western intervention” is not the complete history of one country’s interactions with another - it can be divided into separate cases. US funding of the mujahideen was one case, and the US overthrow of the Taliban was another case. Not disconnected cases. But maybe this explains a point of view that you hadn’t considered when you wrote your original comment.
The other issue here is that when you responded on US intervention in West Germany you seemed only to really focus on Operation Paperclip. But viewed from further out, that didn’t really impact the BRD significantly in comparison to the huge effort put towards rebuilding.
It strikes me though that probably you didn’t mean quite so absolute a statement, which to me seems outlandishly, unrealistically strong. There’s no way you’ve done the level of historical research necessary to really conclude that with any great confidence, right? Surely you’ve seen a lot of instances of harmful interventions and concluded, “they’re all, or at least mostly, harmful”? Maybe that’d be a statement a lot of people could agree with.
I think you have to look at overall outcomes not what it was like under the occupation. In Afghanistan things were probably slightly better in the larger population centers during the occupation for the average person and especially for women. In the rural settings things were worse from the constant skirmishes. And as we saw basically everything was reversed as soon as the troops left.
Libya too.
Libya had better conditions under Qadaffi
Maybe there’s a lesson here for all of Lemmy’s accelerationists
Maybe the better lesson is for those pinning their hopes on the latest, greatest liberal.
Yup. Uncomparably better.
Yes in general (the initial bombings pushed Iran towards hardline IRGC governance), but also:
Syrians are rioting
Wait really? Source?
While i don’t support diaper tantrum Trump but these are the same backwards assholes that are trying to get sympathy for the destruction of a school exclusively for girls where they were taught that without a man they are worthless.
The school destruction shouldn’t have happened but don’t ask for sympathy while doing shit like this.
What? No one is expressing sympathy for the government, they’re expressing sympathy at the senseless loss of life. Those girls lives mattered regardless of what their government wants to force them to believe. I understand being horrified by what they are doing over there, but I really don’t think this comment is getting a point across. Those are two unrelated events that just happened in the same part of the world. We have decades of evidence to suggest that not bombing or doing regime change to countries actually improves living conditions there, so really him bombing likely is setting things back even further.
Exactly I express sympathy for the people of Iran, whether their suffering is at the hands of the US or their government.
Iranian girls are literally better educated than the average American…
If that’s so than that’s more an insult than something to brag about, average American adult is stunted at the level of a 10 year old, so do you want to keep comparing?
The smartest person in the world is better educated than the average American too obviously. Your point makes zero sense. You must be American.
where they were taught that without a man they are worthless.
Uh… source? Something tells me that’s not, in fact, what they’re teaching in Iranian schools. That aside I don’t think I’ve seen Iran ask for anyone’s sympathy—which makes sense, the moral bankruptcy of most of the people in a position to provide that sympathy (aka Western politicians and elites) is very clear in Iranian history. When they were making those AI music videos they were attacking Trump rather than asking for sympathy per se.
b-b-but ir*n is good they are like super communists and fight against western degenerate imperialists.
You can spell IRAN, this is not Reddit. Self-censorship has fried your brain so much that you are afraid to even spell what you want to say.
It’s possible that both Kegsbreath’s ill-informed Iranian incursion and the behaviour of the Iranian regime can both be bad in different ways.
If Western regimes were not committing a full-scale genocide against women and children indiscriminately, you might have had a moral ground to stand on.
Further, in every case of Western intervention, rights devolved, and it was just another resource grab.
The Zionists are just an extension of the US
businessmengovernment. It will be most interesting to watch the end match between the proxy government and the United Statesbusinessmengovernment.
Well, yeah, the regime sucks, bombing a school during school day may not help the people there though.
You Western chauvinists love to talk up feminism, as though you’re not the very people who’ve been opposed to it the whole time.
In America, the no1 cause of death for pregnant people is homicide. And for every 100 rapes reported to the police, 3 people on average will catch charges. You see the West is full of primitive men who only respect their battered and raped women inside Islamophobic fantasies. They hate women in large part because of an ancient and loose confederation of primitive cults collectively called Christianity.
Oh misogyny doesn’t need Christianity to be able to thrive. I’ve worked in the Trades since 1980… and over the decades caught plenty of snide remarks, had my tools stolen and the quality of my work dismissed. Not a Chrsitian man in the lot… just easily threatened limp-dick assholes that thought the jobsite was their clubhouse with No Girls Allowed.
Compared to women not allowed to do anything at all without male presence any sane person would choose not a fundamentalist backwards country. There is nothing good to say about christianity, islam or any organized religion (and about religion in general, somehow it always attracts worst kinds of both people and ideas).
I cant tell if that first part is about Islam or what Christianity is aspiring to. Both I guess.
Iran has played a role in a positive side effect of the US-Israel war at enormous cost to its people. That is the loss of confidence in the US military and soft power. US, Canadian and European gov’ts have not played a positive role in this process. Iran has. You build a strawman around people who note and appreciate the positive role Iran’s played in this process.
There were zero confidence in us soft and very little military power since ~20 years nothing of value was lost.
