I’m in my 50s. The Price is Right and Press Your Luck were the best things about being sick on a school day. I’d haul my pillow and blanket out to the couch and snooze there when grandma watched her stories. She always made aure I was awake for those game ahows, thoigh.

Having learned to read at like four years old greatly expanded available entertainment. Iirc by around fourteen or fifteen I discovered Japanese psychological surrealism in the form of Kobo Abe, while spending days at a country house with bupkis to do except read tons of books and magazines. Which discovery definitely affected my taste for the rest of my life.

During the same summer in the same attic, I found a collection of poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, with a note from the translator and editor: “we would certainly think that this name is made up, except no man names his longfellow ‘Henry’”.

When I was in high school it seemed that Ferris Bueller was always on Comedy Central when I was home sick.

My favorite I’m-8-and-home-sick memory involved me watching the recently unleashed Cartoon Network (this was back in 1992/93). This was when the channel was just hours of Hannah-Barbera shows. So an episode of Top Cat comes on. After it’s over, it plays again. Then again. And again. For several hours Cartoon Network was just one single episode of Top Cat on repeat. I kept it on just to see how many times it would repeat. At one point a little chyron appears along the bottom of the screen saying that there’s been some kind of technical issue and they’re working on it. Even at 8 I’m thinking that this has to be some kind of prank. I still believe this! I mean, these were the guys who would create Space Ghost: Coast to Coast in a few years. Feels very in-character for the future creators of Adult Swim to stick a random episode of Top Cat on repeat during the middle of some random weekday, thinking no one would notice. But I did. And I still think about it.

On at 10 in the morning. Afterwards the soaps would come on and I’d break out the VHS that had Beetlejuice, Willow, and Princess Bride. Good times.

Hell yeah! And after The Price is Right I’d either switch to one of those trashy daytime talk shows, or Lifetime Channel because there was always a good chance that they’d be in the middle of a marathon of Unsolved Mysteries reruns.

I was recently watching a Pixar short film from the early 90s called Tin Toy. It has audio from The Price Is Right in the background with Bob Barker as host. Who would’ve thought a short film from over 30 years ago would involve a tv show still running now
