Rapper Macklemore is a vocal supporter of Palestine and Gaza residents. During a recent concert at MetLife Stadium, he yelled “Free Palestine!” onstage, projected images of devastation in the area, and performed protest song “Hind’s Hall.”
Now, it seems that American venues are not willing to play ball with the Seattle artist, and he has been dropped from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour.
“After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates,” according to Messina Touring Group, the promoter of Loop Tour. This news follows backlash from organizations like StopAntisemitism and others, such as pop star Pink.
such as pop star Pink.
Is Pink some kind of authority on oppressed peoples of the world?!
“Excuse me. We don’t want people who are anti-genocide here. This is a pro-genocide event only! I brought my kid to the show and he was horrified by people who don’t want to slaughter and maim children and flatten homes!”
Seriously they keep calling it anti-semitism, when in reality there is no act that is more antisemitic than genociding semetic people.
They also call it pro-hamas , or even pro-palestine, when in reality no it’s not pro-hamas and not even pro-palestinians, because there are palestinians who are pro-genocide. There is a group of palestinian armed malitia trained and weaponized by the IOF inside Gaza, and there is the PLO who are paid by the IOF and carry out assassinations under IOF commands against palestinians themselves.
They also call it anti-Judaism, when no… it’s anti Zionism.
So it is an anti-genocide at worst, and anti-zionism at best. And Ed Shreen is a twat. and so is this pos genocidal hypocrite cunt Pink. I hope their fans can see through these soulless genocidal sellout hollywood gouls for who they really are, and shun them for the entirety of their careers.
Stokeholders?
The stakeholder has a name.
Macklemore has been dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour after he says New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft organized a boycott among stadium owners over the rapper’s remarks in support of Palestinians.
Awful nice of the corporate media outlet to hide the name of one side while blasting the other.
I’m surprised Bobby Kraft wasn’t too busy getting a rub ‘n tug from a massage joint
Fuck Robert Kraft and his cock-puppet, Ed Sheeran.
Ed Sheeran is that dude who looks like a damp turnip with messy orange hair, right?
TL;DR Ed Sheeran is a fascist.
Woah woah that’s a bit harsh.
I would say Ed is a subhuman invertebrate ghoul who has somehow been cynically shitting out lobotomized slop-pop since 2012, and is now limply capitulating to the whims of his pedofaschist handlers. Least surprising heel turn of the century.
Thank GOD these Venues are going after ANTI SEMETISM by going after artists who
Have songs LITERALLY PRAISING HITLER!say Bombing Children is WRONG!Yeah, the fact that one of the venues refusing Macklemore just let Kanye West play two shows is straight-up hypocrisy.
Only one of those guys has made public statements praising Hitler. (As far as I know, at least.)
Sorry Ed, but there’s no such thing as being “apolitical” anymore. Willingness to ignore the current reality is a political statement in and of itself, and a terrible one at that. If you aren’t willing to seize this moment and stand up for what is right, you can go the fuck away.
I get that it wasn’t his decision whether or not Macklemore got booted, but it was his choice not to go down with the anti-genocide ship, and he did so because he doesn’t want to lose the pro-genocide cash.
Apolitical is just a conservative who doesn’t have the balls to say they’re a conservative.
Fuck ed sheeran
But first the Kraft group, it’s easy to shift the anger to Ed, but you can’t force anyone to pick a side when they don’t want to get involved, He was planning his tour with cool musicians, hoping to maximize his target audience.
It shouldn’t be the case, but taking a stand in the US now makes you lose half of your pie, He invited Maclemore and was able to perform in a couple of show and now people talking about this might increase the numbers of people talking about Palestine.
The Kraft group was the one requesting for Maclemore to be excluded from the tour, and they should be answering those ‘Fuck you’
Fair
Speaking up for Palestine isn’t antisemitism.
Saying that Israel is a genocidal country isn’t antisemitism either.
Given that the Palestinian people are Semitic people themselves, I would say that systematically destroying their lives, homes, and culture is more antisemitic than any combination of words that any person could ever string together.
There are no “semitic people”. It’s a racist term coined by some German dude ages ago and it has no scientific value at all. Stop making antisemitism about Palestinians.
This is true, although, I’m not sure what you mean by that last part.
The term anti-Semitic itself is racist as there are no people of “Shem”. The concept is a weird mashup of those native to the Levant and those who follow the Jewish religion or culture. Anti-Jewish would be a way better descriptor over antisemitic, but Zionists love the term antisemitic as it creates a false impression that their enthonational religious claims over the Levant are historically founded over the native Palestinian population.
If there are no Semitic people, then there are no Palestinians.
Genetic testing has shown that the Palestinians are, by and large, Canaanites.
They are by default a semitic people.
Country of freedom
“stakeholders” decided this, btw, not necessarily Sheeran himself.
reminder that capitalism only ever thinks about “stakeholders” and “profit”
No. He was pressured by the venues and particularly Robert Kraft, lifelong friend of Trump, but made the decision himself.
Being under pressure to do something doesn’t relieve you from the responsibility.
pressured how or for what? this spinless soulless dungtard is worth hundrends of millions already. He’s a pro-genocide pos … no excuse
Fuck this though, sheeran is a fucking human person with a public platform. He has ingested over half a century of socially and politically aware folk music, stripped it of all its depth, context and activism, and shat out gallons of vapid slag that made him unfathomably personably wealthy. Growing a fucking pair of balls on this issue would have been the absolute minimum amount of effort he could have possibly done. Christ, like it would have honestly costed him a fucking cent to speak out against genocide one time. How the fuck are these the people we have chosen to elevate as a society
And ed Sheeran, who is immensely popular and will be fine, should just refuse to play the rest of the tour.
“But he has a contraaaaact” don’t wanna hear it.
Thats what gets me. These creative have the platform to stand on business and choose not to
He didn’t do shit — fuck him.
If he wants to keep good will then he should start his concerts by saying free Palestine then.
i don’t disagree
Sheeran’s established enough to have his own opinions.
How would you know that? Or are you just trying to wash Sheerans hands of the cost of this? You work for a marketing company by chance?
If you’re right then they factored in the cost of the backlash that would head toward Sheeran when more than half of all US voters sympathize with Palestine more than Israel, and 70% of Dems sympathize more with Palestine than israel. Once you start looking at younger people its even worse-- Israel has lost that entire next generation. Ed Sheerans listening demographic is primarily 13-27 year olds. So I hope the cost was worth it to them. They’ll be getting less profits now.
i’m trying to say two things can be true at once.
Blame the people who own the stadiums and who chose to do this.
Blaming Sheeran without even naming the group of stadium owners organized by Robert Kraft is kind of misdiagnosing the issue.
There can be more than one issue
There can be more than one way to spin an issue, yes. Such as by creating a distraction to point blame away from the people who are responsible.
Which you choose to spend your time promoting says something about your priorities.
Ed Shereen and his manager and his owners are all are equal pieces of shits. The twat is worth hundrends of millions and he still chooses to be a repulsive sellout who is pro-genocide.
Does he have billions of dollars and a friend group who owns most of the stadiums and concert venues in the United States?
Pretending Ed Shereen and Robert Kraft are equally bad in this situation is disingenuous. One made the decision to blacklist anti-genocide artists and the other didn’t fight him.
Talking about Ed Shereen, in the context of this story, is providing a smoke screen for Kraft and the other owners who are using their wealth to try to control messaging on Israel.
Unless you’re collecting a paycheck to, I can’t imagine how this is difficult to understand.
Not even profit. That’s just the permission structure. How often have stakeholders ruined a business or product because it wasnt the market they wanted
Same thing
What is so threatening about divesting and wanting peace?
I’m a municipal government official in Texas, and I’m required to deny contracts to companies that don’t support Israel.
Like: it’s a specific contract review criteria mandated by state law.
That’s fuct!
fr?
Turns out basic human rights and not murdering innocent starving people is somehow controversial.
brb buying all the Mackelmore mp3s I like
So Ed Sheeran is a piece of shit, eh?
According to Macklemore, Sheeran was told by venues to cut him, or cancel the whole tour. Sheeran tries to remain non-political as part of his brand. But it really feels like we’re up against the sad point where, if just saying “don’t genocide people” makes you “political”, then refusing to be political makes you a piece of shit.
I think a lot of artists are still riding this line between staying safe and potentially nuking their entire career. I won’t act like that’s an easy decision for anyone to make, but obviously looking from the outside it’s easy to see what the right decision is.
Time will tell. There’s still time for Ed to walk out on stage at his biggest show of the tour, throw a fist in the air, and say Free Palestine. I’ve had zero thoughts about him up until this point, but that would at least give me one shred of respect for him.
There’s still time for Ed to walk out on stage at his biggest show of the tour, throw a fist in the air, and say Free Palestine.
Honestly, this would flip the tables on the venues (ahem, LiveNation)…they’re ok throwing their weight around to get Macklemore dropped from tours, but Ed Sheeran is making them tens of millions of dollars…they would probably shut the fuck up if he did this.
Adam Sandler: He’s not going to though
Chris Farley: No, but you can imagine what it would be like if he did.
“American Venues”
Not sure who’s calling the shots here
EDIT:
The rapper alleges that Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft gave Sheeran an ultimatum.
If Robert Kraft and the other stadium owners break tour contracts over a “we don’t like your opener” thing after they already signed, it’ll be huge fees and possibly a lawsuit. Ed Sheeran had leverage here and he didn’t use it.
His record label had the leverage and chose not to use it. There’s very little say the artists themselves actually have in these kinds of things.
This isn’t some starving artist we’re talking about here. This guy already has more money than you’ll make in your entire life working an honest job.
Does that give him any more agency in what transpires between his record label and the venues where he’s booked?
He already has a name, time to cut loose?
All them big name artists could put their money where their mouth isn’t and build a venue, i’m sure it wouldn’t make Bono any poorer. This is, actually not a bad idea. Someone send this to someone like Jack White. Get together a bunch of top musicians to actually fund the creation of a network of publicly owned venues. They can share resources and even pay artists real wages for performances. Call it a public option. Just needs the seed money
Nothing says “good guy” like compromising your principles for money, right? tf is your argument here?
It’s likely not up to him as he has contractual obligations that could ruin more than just his own livelihood.
The whole system is fucked. Rotten to the core
EDIT: these replies are peak left self harm.
Macklemore: free Palestine
NFL Stadium Owners: drop Macklemore or we’ll cancel your show
label and tour management: we can’t lose all these venues, so Macklemore has to go
Lemmy community: how could Ed Sheeran do this??
Like, how about we point our anger at the people actually causing the problem, instead of the guy trying to salvage his tour in a no-win situation because of racist fucks
If the venue is giving him an ultimatum then he clearly has the agency to tell them no. Otherwise they would be executing the contract not making demands.
Ed Sheeran has an estimated net worth of around $350 million to $400 million
Won’t somebody think of the millionaires? His whole livelihood is at stake here!
And it’s not like his livelihood is even at massive risk - he’s a big enough name that any arena worth his time to perform at will be big enough that there won’t be other acts available that will sell enough seats at short notice, so they’re pretty likely to cave if he puts his foot down.
THIS is the part that gets me. Ed could have come at Kraft and the other venue owners and threw some hate to ticketmaster for good measure and probably come out fine
Did you not read the part where I said “more than his own livelihood”? Or did you just choose to ignore it?
There are so many more people than just Ed Sheeran who would be hurt by him breaching his contract. Everyone working that tour would be hurt. Likely hundreds of people who are doing gig work for this tour.
That’s so American: 100’s of Americans might lose their paycheck, so we can’t do anything to protest the 1000’s of non-Americans getting killed.
please quote where I said “do nothing”.
because “don’t do this” is not the same as “do nothing”
Why would Ed Sheeran be breaching a contract if he hadn’t caved? The arena owners were threatening to refuse to let him play, they would have been them in breach of contract, not him.
source on that please?
Everyone working that tour would be hurt.
Stop FUDing, they’d get another gig, it’s literally their job.
yeah I mean who cares about people losing their jobs, you just go get another one, easy 🤡
And the truck & bus drivers, catering, roadies, grips, crew, wardrobe, sound guys. You think he puts in all the work himself?
Listen I’m not defending Ed Sheeran’s decision here but don’t forget it’s not always about JUST his money - he personally knows a shitload of people who are going to lose their next 18 months’ income without much recourse if he bails now, who aren’t millionaires. Tour work is literally gig work.
And the truck & bus drivers, catering, roadies, grips, crew, wardrobe, sound guys. You think he puts in all the work himself?
No. You think they only work for him?
Sheeran has more than enough money to pay those people out of pocket for any dates that canceled.
Yup. People seem to be ignoring the part where I specifically said “more than his own livelihood”.
And this isn’t even touching on the impact to future contracts. Venues and other businesses don’t want to sign contracts with people who have shown a willingness to breach agreements for personal or political reasons.
It doesn’t even sound like it’s his decision. Seriously, how much agency do people really think musicians have over their performances, venues, lineups, etc.? That’s all handled by record labels, agents, managers, etc.
If the venue says “not so-and-so” and the record label says “okay,” there’s literally jack-shit that the headliner can do about it…
He has enough of a name to start his own label.
I would tell the “system” to get bent. Ed Sheeran doesn’t have to do anything. It’s his tour, if they don’t want to allow him to perform over human rights, that’s on them.
If this is true, I’m going to remove every Ed Sheeran song from my music library.
Is he responsible for his obligations if the stadium refuses him? Sounds to me like he would have made an effort to meet his contract, but someone else refused him.
Honest question, I have no idea how these things work, but have a hard time believing Sheeran had no choice but to give in
Separate contracts. Sheeran’s contract and Macklemore’s contract are unlikely to be contingent on each other. Plus there are probably terms in the contract regarding conditions under which the venue is allowed to break the contract “for cause” which Macklemore’s situation likely breaches
Those same contractual obligations should apply to the stadium owners.
good thing the earth is so tiny and most of the universe completely misses this shit.
Okay, bear with me here but, if I’ve gotten this right (good probability I haven’t), if we divide the earth’s mass of ~6 x 1024 kg by the estimated total mass of the observable universe, ~3 x 1052 kg, Earth represents 0000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000 00000000001% of the total mass of the observable universe.
I’d say that effectively, though not technically, none of our absolute fuckery has any impact on Big Universe, if only by mass comparison. Thank fuck.
It’s not like Macklemore has been quiet about his stance on Palestine. If it were a problem with Ed Sheeran, he probably wouldn’t have been on the tour in the first place.
Yeah but Sheeran is willing to bend the knee to keep the tour going. A real one would apologize to fans and let it be known it’s the venue owners cancelling shows and why.
It’s not like he’s some Indy act who won’t get more shows.
Ed Sheeran would never play the United States again if he pissed off Robert Kraft and the stadium owners (and LiveNation along with them).
Sometimes it’s about more than money. There’s plenty of non stadium venues he could still tour at.
Glad the US isn’t the world (unless you’re murican).
Ed is a brand, not a talent.
Watch. If he had refused to go on without Macklemore, these guys would’ve said “oh the rich baby didn’t want to go on because Macklemore said Palestine” or some shit.
Blame the rich fucks for their crimes; don’t invent new catch-22s to hang on them.
If “these guys” you’re talking about are Zionists, then I don’t think he should care what kind of vitriol they try to brew up for him. In fact, pissing them off is often the correct stance.
zionists are calling the shots in “american venues”
…and then Sheeran chose wrong.
So a piece of shit
I know precious little about him, but he sounds like a real dick.
That was my thought exactly!
It seems like it’s the venues that won’t let Mackelmore play.
“After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates,”
From the tour promoters.
Ah yes, the most important part of music: stakeholders.
and Sheeran should refuse to work with those stakeholders
He might be contractually obligated to with significant penalties if he drops. Without knowing the contract it’s hard to tell. He might not even be able to get out of it by doing what Mackelmore did.
But it doesn’t look like he’s made a statement on it yet.
The articles made it seem like the venues forced Sheeran to drop macklemore. Sheeran may not have had a say.
He could tell the venues if they wanted to cancel his opening acts, they could cancel his show, too. That would require someone to have principles, though. 🤷♂️
he can play somewhere else
I realize that the state of touring venues is pretty fucked up, but someone with his sway is the only kind of person who can say “you know what, no, fuck you guys”
He sounds famous. I think he has some say. Of course so do venues, but I’d expect Ed Sheeran to have no problem finding other venues.
My conclusion from this is that Ed Sheeran supports genocide and that Macklemore is cooler than I thought.
TIL Macklemore is based
He always has been. Naturally, his one goofy song about thrifting is the one that went viral.
Even the goofy thrifting song is based as fuck. It’s a rejection of fast fashion and manufactured style in favour of joyous self-expression on a working class budget.
Even his thrift shop song is based. The song is about recycling and not buying overpriced brand shit (can’t even call it designer shit when it’s a plain T with a Gucci logo).
His one goofy song about thrifting was EXTREMELY well made to be fair. Funny lyrics, funny video, very distinctive beat. Having Wanz do the hook was a great choice, his voice is like a change in gears.
Eh Same Love also blew up from that album which, while woke, is also pretty corny. The album also famously won the Grammy over Kendrick Lamar so I’d say his other songs got their fair share of fame.
The Grammys being trash is nothing new and also not really Macklemore’s fault
On the other hand, I’ve got no argument at all that a lot of his music is corny af, but even when he was at his most cringe he was still trying to be a good dude at least
For sure, I was just mentioning the Grammy thing in terms of popularity. And yeah it does seem like he puts his money where his mouth is on social issues.
WHEN I WAS IN THE THIRD GRADE, I THOUGHT I WAS GAY
I know it’s just another big hit one but man I love how he just starts and doesn’t stop in “Can’t Hold Us.”
That was the song of the summer the year it came out. Went pretty hard can’t lie.
Where was the antisemitic part?
Gonna have to change his stage name to Macklemost
And get sued by Mattermost.
He is, but also a really corny dude to the point where he gives right wing pundits someone to point and laugh at. I know he is genuine and wants to put eyeballs on issues, however he sometimes came off performative about it which turns people off unfortunately.
Nah, fuck that. What you’re calling corny is just sincerity. Leave that irony poisoned “caring about things is cringe” bullshit to the right wing chuds.
As I said, it’s unfortunate people take someone’s sincerity the wrong way… I’m glad he is doing what he is doing 100%.
I like some of his songs about Palestine, but this guy put out songs specifically targeting Biden/Harris saying he won’t vote for them.
This guy helped Trump win.
Edit: from Hinds Hall: “The blood is on your hands Biden, we can see it all. And fuck no, I’m not voting for you in the fall.”
wow, he is a good guy after all and not just some blue maga freak, good for him.
Your right, it’s good Trump won. Things are going so well.
Edit: Both sides are the same, right everyone?
It’s time you people stop relying on the excuse that any Biden criticism is the same as equating both sides. It’s kinda pathetic and the same type of shit that will make people less likely to vote for the Democrats as it only serves as a way to suppress criticism.
do you know that tweet where that one guy is like, “i like waffles” and another guy replies saying “so you hate pancakes?”
i hope thats enough to say but the liberal mind is incomprehensible to me so idk.
